Overview

The most northerly of the United Kingdom’s nations, Scotland is hugely varied for a country with a population of just five million.

Trains in Scotland are operated by companies such as First ScotRail, CrossCountry, First Transpennine Express, East Coast and Virgin Trains. Book train tickets to visit main cities of Scotland by train. Scottish cities including Edinburg, Glasgow and Inverness are all served by trains.

Cityscape

Two train stations serve Edinburgh, both with excellent facilities. In the capital you’ll find shopping, pampering and year-round festivals. From here take an East Coast train across Scotland to Aberdeen and visit the castles and museums that define a time gone by.

Landscape

Scotland’s award-winning West Highland train line reveals some fascinating sites. The Scottish Highlands are a haven for outdoor adventure; visit Inverness by train for adrenalin pumping outdoor adventure including paintballing and watersports. Scotland is widely regarded as a golf haven, so take your kit and enjoy the spectacular views as you tee off.

Take Home

Anything tartan! Scotland is proud of its print, and it’s everywhere from ribbons, to blankets and of course the infamous kilt – that will get the folk back at home talking. Glasgow has Scotland’s best shopping, so for the latest fashions and trendiest boutiques hop on the CrossCountry train from Edinburgh, you’ll be there in just over an hour.

Eat & Drink

Tuck into a traditional Burns Supper of haggis, turnips and mashed potato in Ayr and sample Cullen Skink fish and potato soup in the East Neuk of Fife. Visit Islay to sample some of the world’s peatiest whiskies.

New Perspective

Why not go all out and climb Ben Nevis? The summit is a mere 1,344 metres (4,409 ft) above sea level – just a stroll in the park!

    Bristol to paddington direct |
"This has historically been a painless journey and this one was no different. Continues to be a pretty punctual route, with just about enough seats to accommodate demand. Only concern would be if you were joining after Bristol, seat reservations weren't marked and it wasn't clear that the operator was honoring them at all. As the service starts in Bristol that was not an issue for me. "

    London to Edinbrugh Express |
"The trip was fast and comfortable. The workers on the train were polite and nice. The only issue was the fact that there were only a couple of times that the cart came and it was kinda expensive. Overall it was a quick ride and a pleasant one. "

"we are really enjoying traveling with Virgin train, the service is excellent but unfortunately on the way back to London we missed the train and we can not utilize the tickets for the next schedule and we have to buy new ones only for lower class with special rate - being helped by the ticketing officer "

  • Carlisle to Euston |
"Good trip, train was on time and good value for money. Easy to book and print tickets at station. Used to Swiss trains that are more spacious than the British ones, but no complaints. "
