Seville, the Andalusian capital

Seville, the Andalusian capital

Seville is the capital of Andalusia, in Spain. The city is located in southern Spain on the plain of River Guadalquivir. People in Seville are very out-going and friendly. The Old Town of Seville is one of the Europe’s largest, and it is home to 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Alcazar palace, the Cathedral and the General Archives of the Indies. Founded by the Roman, the city was also under Islamic Rule in 712. The 2,200 year old city of Seville has a distinct and rich heritage due to the passage of the various civilisations. Although it has a strong mediaeval, renaissance and baroque heritage, the city was greatly influenced by Arabic culture. Its well-preserved historical centre is a good testimony of those eras.

About Spain

In Seville there are many interesting things to visit, like the Cathedral, the Giralda and the Alcazar. The Cathedral was built from 1401–1519 after the Reconquista. The interior is the longest nave in Spain, and is lavishly decorated, with a large quantity of gold evident.

The Giralda, originally a minaret, was converted into a bell tower. It is topped with a statue, known locally as El Giraldillo, representing Faith. The tower’s interior was built with ramps rather than stairs, to allow the Muezzin and others to ride on horseback to the top.

The Alcazar’s gardens are a blend of Moorish, Andalusian, and Christian traditions. The Barrio de Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Quarter). It is one of the most delightful parts of the city, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses, where you can sit outside a bar, enjoy some tapas, or wander through old gardens.

Head to El Rinconcillio for a unique tapas experience. Some say it is the oldest tapas bar in Seville. It certainly feels like little has changed in many years, with its flagstone floors and ancient bottles of wine lining the walls.

To find the best places to shop in Seville, head to Calle Sierpes, running from the Campana up to Plaza Salvador, and Calles Tetuan and Cuna, which run parallel on either side of Sierpes. The Plaza Nueva, a traffic free zone, is the place where you will find chic boutiques.

    Great service | Coenraad h. | 2015/10/04
"Our experience with Rail Europe and Renfe was outstanding. It was very easy to book the tickets on the Rail Europe website - easy to access, easy to understand and effective. We never had a problem with our tickets on any of the journeys we took. The trains are very clean, comfortable and very convenient. In comparison to hiring a car and driving, it is so nice to just sit and relax on the train, not worrying about whether you taking the correct route or speed tickets etc. The trains are very quiet as well so we could catch up on some sleep seeing as we stretch every day to the maximum on our travels. I would really advise anyone to use Rail Europe and the Renfe speed trains! "
